Happy New Year, reader!
Here we are, at the start of a fresh, new year. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year, and had a bit of a break to rest and restore your energy.
Did you make some New Year resolutions?
Once upon a time, I used to make New Year resolutions, and failed miserably almost every time. I'm not alone - apparently most people who make resolutions have given up on them by January 19th!
Now, I don't make resolutions, but I do choose a "theme" each year, and return to it regularly to ensure that I'm making decisions, taking action, and working changes that are consistent with it.
Why are we more likely to do something like this at the start of the year? It turns out, because of the way our minds work, beginnings are a great time for us to make changes. And there are 86 days this year when it will be easier for you to kick off lasting change. It's not woo-woo, it's science!

What do you take (or avoid) responsibility for?
The following graphic really hits home for me every time I look at it. It's a solid reminder to take a moment and work out what I'm trying to take (or avoid!) responsibility for.
Sometimes, I try to take responsibility for what's in the outer circle, contorting myself to try to avoid someone else feeling unhappy or uncomfortable. It never works out well for me, but I still occasionally find myself attempting the impossible!
And sometimes, I try to avoid responsibility for what's in my inner circle. The blame mindset creeps in: "So and so made me sad/mad/late". Or I play the victim, not even attempting to take reasonable, relevant action, but then wasting time and energy complaining about the undesirable outcome of my inaction.
So, what do you take (or avoid) responsibility for? Which circle is it in? While there are many things you can't control, and are not responsible for, you are still the most powerful person in your life.
- the choices you make,
- which thoughts you entertain,
- the relationships you nurture,
- which words you say,
- the actions you will take.
If you're ready to step up and take full responsibility for what's in your inner circle, working with a coach can seriously accelerate your progress. A great coach asks beautiful questions, supports you as you sort through your options, challenges you to raise your expectations of yourself, holds you accountable to your commitments, and celebrates your wins as though they are their own.
To find out if coaching is right for you, book your free, 30-minute discovery call with me. We'll chat about what's important to you, the challenges you are facing, and how working together will unleash your inner genius.

This morning, as I sat outside with my coffee admiring my summer flowers, I realised that gardening is a great metaphor for working with strengths. There are so many different elements to consider as you plan and care for your garden. And the way you understand and work with each element contributes to the outcome you get. When you line …

Life tends to serve me up metaphors at every turn - and the last day of 2021 gave me a fantastic object lesson in my attitude towards mistakes.
